‘Million Keynes’, Connecting Growth Across the Region

The UK Government’s New Towns Taskforce has identified twelve locations for the next generation of new communities and Milton Keynes is one of them.

The Taskforce’s vision positions Milton Keynes as a “renewed town”, capable of delivering around 40,000 new homes while strengthening links with surrounding towns and settlements. The emphasis is on connected growth — expanding sustainably, investing in public transport, and supporting an already thriving local economy.

At Troy Planning + Design, that vision strikes a chord. In our 2017 Oxford–Cambridge Corridor competition entry, we imagined Million Keynes , a bold concept for a more integrated city-region where Milton Keynes sits at the heart of a network of sustainable and active travel routes linking Oxford, Cambridge, Bedford, Northampton, and beyond.

Our concept graphic (below) captured that ambition, growth not in isolation, but as part of a joined-up regional system that supports climate goals, accessibility, and quality of life.

We’re excited to see these ideas gaining national momentum and look forward to helping shape Milton Keynes’ next chapter as a truly connected, renewed city.
