We have been commissioned by Brighton and Hove City Council to explore how far neighbourhoods in Brighton and Hove meet the features of the ‘20-minute neighbourhood’. This will involve reviewing and mapping provision of the infrastructure required to support everyday activities, and how well located these are in relation to the home.
Pilot studies will then be undertaken across a selection of neighbourhoods to identify what interventions might be made to help those places function in accordance with the key principles underpinning the concept of the 20-minute neighbourhood.
A tool-box of ideas and strategies, from micro-level projects to larger scale interventions will be prepared which can be adapted and used across Brighton and Hove so that all communities can benefit from being a 20-minute neighbourhood.
The work is being undertaken in partnership with GIS consultants StraTopo, utilising their Isochrone API tool.
The commission continues our work in this field which included a study of ‘complete neighbourhoods’ and settlement hierarchy for Southend and Rochford.
Our work will use and adapt the features of a 20-minute neighbourhood identified by the TCPA, whose guidance on the matter features our work on the Hailsham Neighbourhood Plan as a case study example.
